Pathfinder 1 & Gilt Edge FAQs
The Pathfinder and Gilt Edge projects form a major programme to expand access to public EV charging across Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, Highland and Moray.
Working in partnership with the four local authorities, EZO is delivering more than 500 new public charging points across the North of Scotland. The programme combines charging locations identified through the Pathfinder Project with additional Gilt Edge sites, helping to improve charging availability for residents, businesses and visitors through a growing network of reliable and accessible public chargers.
Charging locations have been identified through a strategic programme developed by the partner councils. Sites are assessed against a range of factors, including local demand, accessibility, power availability, land ownership and technical feasibility.
This page answers some of the most frequently asked questions about the Pathfinder and Gilt Edge projects.
What is a Pathfinder site?
Pathfinder sites are charging locations identified by the local councils as part of their long term EV charging infrastructure strategy. The delivery of these sites is supported through investment from both the local authority and EZO, with EZO responsible for the planning, installation, operation and ongoing management of the charging infrastructure.
What is a Gilt Edge site?
Gilt Edge sites are additional charging locations identified by EZO in collaboration with local councils to help expand public EV charging across the region. These sites are fully funded, installed, operated and maintained by EZO as part of our ongoing investment in charging infrastructure.
How many chargers is EZO installing?
EZO is delivering more than 880 new chargers across Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, Highland and Moray. This includes both Pathfinder and Gilt Edge sites and represents one of the largest public EV charging infrastructure programmes in Scotland.
How are charging locations selected?
The partner councils have developed a programme of proposed charging locations to support the future growth of public EV charging infrastructure. Proposed sites are assessed against a range of factors, including local demand, accessibility, power availability, land ownership and technical feasibility.
How will I know when a site is approved or installed?
This webpage will be updated as locations progress through planning, approval and installation stages.
What type of chargers will be installed?
The charger type will depend on local requirements and site suitability. Locations may include fast, rapid and ultra rapid charging, with charging speeds ranging from 7kW to 200kW. Planned charger types are shown on the roadmap page where available.
Will my town or village receive a new charger?
New charging locations have been identified across Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, Highland and Moray. You can search the roadmap on this page to see whether your community has been included in the programme.
Why is my town or village not receiving a new charger?
New charging locations have been identified across Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, Highland and Moray. New site locations will be added to the roadmap once they have been approved. You can search the roadmap on this page to see whether your community has been included in the programme.
Will the community council be informed?
Community councils will be informed when Pathfinder sites have been identified within their area. This will help ensure local representatives are aware of proposed charging locations as the programme progresses.
Can community councils suggest additional locations?
Community councils should contact their local authority if they would like to suggest potential charging locations. While site selection decisions are made by the councils, local knowledge and feedback can help inform future reviews of charging infrastructure requirements.
When will new chargers be installed?
Installation timelines vary from site to site. Each location must progress through planning, design, technical assessments and any required approvals before installation can begin. For the latest updates on individual locations, please refer to the roadmap page, which contains the most up to date information on site progress and planned installations.
How does this programme benefit local communities?
The programme will help improve access to public EV charging, support the transition to electric vehicles, encourage sustainable travel and provide better charging facilities for residents, businesses and visitors.
Will chargers be available for everyone to use?
Yes. Public charging locations are intended to be available for residents, businesses and visitors, subject to any site specific restrictions.
Do I need to order a new EZO RFID card?
Yes. If you’d like to start a charge quickly without using the app, you can order an EZO RFID fob after setting up your account. Just open the EZO app, go to Account > My RFID Cards > tap the + icon > select Order an RFID card.
How do I order a replacement RFID fob?
If someone loses their fob, they can simply open a support ticket in the EZO app, and our team will arrange for a replacement to be sent out free of charge.
How long will my new EZO fob take to arrive?
Once you’ve ordered your EZO RFID fob, it typically arrives within 7 to 10 working days. You’ll receive an email confirmation once your order has been processed.
ChargePlace Scotland’s transition to EZO
EZO has begun transitioning the ChargePlace Scotland (CPS) network across Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, Moray and the Highland councils.
You’ll start to see EZO chargers appearing in more locations across Scotland in the months ahead, with many more to follow as the rollout continues. For the most up-to-date information on which sites have migrated, visit our Phase 1 Migration Plan page.
As part of this process, no customer or payment data has been shared with EZO. To access and use chargers across Scotland, all users will need to create a new EZO account. This can be done quickly and easily through the EZO app.
We understand that transitions can take some adjustment, and our goal is to make this change as seamless as possible. This page has been created to answer common questions from EV drivers and to help guide you through the move from ChargePlace Scotland to EZO with ease.
Can I use my existing ChargePlace Scotland login details for EZO?
No. Your ChargePlace Scotland account belongs to that network and won’t carry over. You’ll need to create a new EZO account to continue using public chargers. Simply download the EZO app, and set up a new account.
• Download the EZO app - Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
Can I still use the ChargePlace Scotland app?
Yes, the CPS network is still active in some areas in Scotland. You can continue using the CPS app to access any chargers that haven’t yet migrated in those areas.
What happens to my ChargePlace Scotland RFID card, and will it still work?
Your ChargePlace Scotland RFID card will continue to work on chargers that remain on the CPS network for the next 3+ months. Once a charger migrates to EZO, it will no longer recognise CPS cards. To access migrated sites, you’ll need to use the EZO app or order an EZO RFID fob.
How do I download and log in to the EZO app?
You can download the EZO app for free from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Once installed, create a new account using your email address to start charging and manage your sessions.
Will I still be able to use the same chargers after the transition?
Yes. The same public chargers are being migrated to the EZO network. Once a site transitions, you’ll simply access it using the EZO app or your EZO RFID fob instead of the CPS app or card.
Where can I see the charging tariffs?
You can view the latest charging tariffs on our tariff information page or directly within the EZO app. Simply select a charging location to view the current connection fee, energy cost per kWh and any applicable overstay charges.
To help keep drivers informed, tariff information is also displayed on charger screens and will continue to be made available through on site customer information where appropriate.
How do I report a fault on an EZO charger?
If you encounter an issue contact our 24/7 Customer Support team. Include the charger’s ID number (found on the unit) and detail the issue.

Absolutely. EZO follows strict GDPR and data protection standards. None of your personal information from ChargePlace Scotland is transferred automatically. When you create your new EZO account, your data is securely stored and used only to manage your charging services.
What is a pre-authorisation charge?
A pre-authorisation charge is a temporary hold of funds on your account linked to the payment card. It’s there to ensure that every customer has sufficient funds to cover the upcoming transaction.
The pre-authorisation charge is set at £50 for DC chargers, and £25 for AC chargers. The pre-authorisation payment is only held for 48 hours, and only the amount you charge will be deducted from your account.
